Continuing our discussion on the history of the ERA in the ’70s from the perspective of the Mrs. America series.

About this Event

It is not necessary to watch the show, although it is fabulous. It is also not necessary to have attended the previous meetings!

The Mrs. America series is a dramatization of the struggle that ERA women, for and against, endured in getting enough states to ratify the amendment to the constitution by 1979 and, unfortunately, their inability to do so. The history of the struggle has been tumultuous and even is still ongoing. Check out these websites to improve your understanding. Where Your State Stands in the Fight

In this third episode, the story of Shirley Chisolm, the first African American Woman to attempt a run for the Presidency. Her convention galvanizing speech included, “In this country, everybody is supposed to be able to run for president, but that has never really been true,” she says. “Somebody had to do it first. So I did it.” motivated many more to help with the movement.
