The recent Hulu show, Mrs. America takes a look at the second wave of the Women’s Movement and events surrounding the ratification of the ERA. Naturally, we need to discuss it! Join us for a Zoom panel, we will discuss the accuracies and inaccuracies of this show as well as a discussion of where the ERA is now and what needs to happen in order to ratify.
We will be discussing the first episode of the series in this panel!
Mrs. America, FX series, is loosely based on the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly, played by Blanchett. Through the eyes of the women of that era, Schlafly and second-wave feminists Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus. The series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the ’70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted our political landscape.
